Recognising a Report on the Significant Economic Impact of Torness

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the reported significant economic and environmental impact of Torness Power Station in East Lothian, since it began operating in 1988; notes the findings of a new report by Economic Insight, which highlights that Torness has contributed £16.1 billion to the UK economy, supported more than 2,600 jobs annually for over 35 years, and avoided 146 million tonnes of carbon emissions, which it understands is equivalent to removing all cars from UK roads for two years; acknowledges that EDF’s nuclear fleet contributed over £1 billion in taxes in 2024, including £400 million through the Electricity Generator Levy, and has sustained steady electricity output of 37.3TWh in the same year; commends the contribution of Torness and the wider nuclear fleet in delivering zero-carbon electricity, supporting thousands of livelihoods, and in what it believes is its role in enhancing energy security, and calls on the Scottish Government to ensure that nuclear energy is part of Scotland’s future energy mix, recognising what it sees as its role as a reliable and sustainable energy source.
