Recognition of James Dunbar as a Big Issue Changemaker for Housing and Homelessness

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates James Dunbar, chief executive of New Start Highland, on being named a Big Issue Changemaker for Housing and Homelessness 2025; understands that this comes in recognition of his transformative work in combatting homelessness and poverty across the Highlands; acknowledges the dedication and leadership that James has shown over the past 25 years, guiding New Start Highland in its mission to provide not just shelter, but also comprehensive support services aimed at improving physical, emotional and economic stability for vulnerable individuals and families; commends New Start Highland for its work in supporting over 1,500 people annually, offering services such as employability training, housing support, and essential household goods, including diverting 10,000 tons of furniture from landfill and distributing over 30,000 furniture and starter packs to those in need; praises what it sees as James Dunbar’s unwavering belief in human potential, which has helped countless individuals break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, transforming lives and strengthening communities across the Highlands; urges continued support for organisations like New Start Highland, and believes that they play a vital role in tackling homelessness and creating lasting positive change within local communities.
