Alva Academy Competes for the First Time in the 2025 SP Energy Networks Glasgow Warriors Rugby Championship

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that Alva Academy has entered the 2025 SP Energy Networks Glasgow Warriors Rugby Championship for the first time; understands that the tournament, which begins at Scotstoun Stadium in February 2025 and is now in its eighth year, is one of the highlights of the award-winning community partnership between the electricity network operator and the rugby club; further understands that the tournament supports rugby at a grassroots level and creates a platform for aspiring rugby stars, while spotlighting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities to encourage students to think about a career beyond the game; notes that a total of 22 schools will battle it out in 2025 with Troon’s Marr College looking to defend its winning reign for another year, while newcomer Alva Academy is said to have its sights set on championship glory; further notes that the launch event included a workshop on how electricity works from "Stemovators", a project of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI), which is on a mission to create the next generation of scientists, engineers and tech experts; notes that students also heard from Warriors players and professionals at the launch event, on the science behind rugby and the importance of health and wellbeing; believes that opportunities such as this help support active lifestyles among young people in their communities, while developing important skills like teamwork, communication and leadership, in addition to shining a spotlight on what the industry and STEM roles can offer them; commends Glasgow Warriors, SP Energy Networks and all those involved in running the championship and STEM opportunities, and wishes Alva Academy, and all the competitors, the very best of luck in this excellent championship.
