Commending NHS Forth Valley Lead Parkinson’s Nurse, Kay Mair

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that a Forth Valley nurse with 30 years’ experience in the field spent a day in Royal company after being invited to celebrate the work of Parkinson’s nurses around the UK; understands that Kay Mair, NHS Forth Valley Lead Nurse for Parkinson’s, who is one of Scotland’s longest serving Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists, attended an afternoon tea reception hosted by the Duchess of Gloucester, Patron of Parkinson’s UK, at St James’s Palace, London, in early March 2025; believes that the event celebrated and recognised the 35th anniversary of the Parkinson’s nurse; notes that a total of 27 nurses were invited from across the UK to share their experiences as long-serving professionals who have played an integral role in education, service development and research within the Parkinson’s community; notes that Kay has been a part of the Parkinson’s nursing community since 1996, and, in the same year, she became a founding member of the Association of Scottish Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists (ASPNS); understands that, reflecting on this milestone event, Kay noted how it marked a significant personal journey within the field and was a testament to the dedication of Parkinson’s nurses across Scotland; notes that Parkinson’s nurses have specific training and skills to care for people living with the complex brain condition and that there are more than 40 symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, which it believes is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world; considers that the specialist nurses have a crucial role in working with other healthcare professionals to provide tailored support for individual patients, who are often affected differently by Parkinson’s; commends Kay and all her colleagues for the hard work, enthusiasm and energy that they all bring to their role each day, and shares the appreciation that NHS Forth Valley holds in having Kay as a key member of their inter-disciplinary team.
