Dr Joshua Smith, Postgraduate Research Student Teacher of the Year, at the RATE Teaching Awards 2025

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates University of Stirling alumnus, Dr Joshua Smith, on being awarded Postgraduate Research Student Teacher of the Year at the RATE Teaching Awards 2025; understands that the Recognising and Advancing Teaching Excellence (RATE) Award scheme was first introduced by Stirling Students' Union in 2010 and that the student-led RATE Awards have been recognising what it sees as exceptional people and teams at the University of Stirling ever since; acknowledges that Dr Smith began his undergraduate degree in History and Politics at the University of Stirling in 2014 and graduated with first class honours in 2018; notes that, after completing his studies at Stirling, Dr Smith undertook a Masters in History at the University of Liverpool and graduated with distinction in December 2019; understands that in October 2020, Dr Smith began an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Scottish Graduate School of Arts and Humanities (SGSAH) funded PhD at the University of Stirling and that in November 2024, he successfully defended his thesis and passed without corrections; further understands that Dr Smith was also awarded a British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS) Postgraduate Conference Award, at BSECS's 52nd Annual Conference, Homecoming, Return, and Recovery, held between 4 to 6 January 2023 at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford, in addition to the Ernest Walder Memorial Scholarship at Gladstone's Library for 2025; commends him on his fastidious and detailed studies, and wishes him all the very best in his future endeavours.
