Marking 60 Years of Trusted Teaching and the Enduring Contribution of the General Teaching Council for Scotland

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) on its 60th anniversary; notes that GTCS was established in 1965 following concerted efforts by teachers to secure greater recognition, regulation and respect for the profession, making it one of the first teaching councils in the world; understands that, since becoming fully independent in 2012, GTCS has served as the world’s first self-regulating professional body for teachers, and believes that it has continued to play a vital role in maintaining high professional standards, supporting teacher development, and promoting public trust in education; recognises the progress that it has made over six decades; notes the publication of GTCS’s 2026 manifesto priorities; welcomes its commitment to engage in dialogue with policymakers, including through a planned roundtable in the Parliament in autumn 2025, and commends GTCS for its longstanding service to Scottish education and for its continued leadership as it enters its seventh decade.
