World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament notes that it is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June 2025 and joins charity, Hourglass, in growing the conversation around what it sees as the abuse and neglect of older people in Scotland; considers that the stigma and shame around abuse can no longer be tolerated; calls on all MSPs to recognise that abuse of older people can take many forms, including sexual, physical, emotional and economic; notes the recent Hourglass/YouGov polling, which highlights a range of attitudes towards the economic abuse of older people in Scotland, specifically, that 26% of respondents do not believe that taking items from an older relative’s home without asking is a form of abuse; further notes that, according to the survey, 20% of respondents do not believe that using a power of attorney over an older relative for personal financial gain is a form of abuse, and notes that the survey further highlighted that 27% of respondents do not believe that family members trying to change the wills of older relatives is a form of abuse, and that 13% of respondents do not believe that scamming an older person out of money either online or over the phone is a form of abuse.
