Duncan Scott Helps to Set a New British Record in Japan

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Duncan Scott on helping to set a new Britishrecord during the opening night of swimming at the 2025 World AquaticsChampionships; understands that the swimmer, who is originally from Alloa andis Scotland’s most decorated Olympian, is currently in Singapore as a member ofthe Great British team at the competition, which began on 11 July and runsuntil 3 August 2025; acknowledges that diving, water polo, artistic swimmingand open water swimming events have also featured at the meeting; notes thatDuncan started with the men’s 4x100 metres freestyle, where he lined-upalongside Jacob Mills, Jacob Henry Whittle and Tom Dean in the heats andqualified for the final, for which Matthew Richards replaced Dean, with Scottswimming the final leg in a time of three minutes and 12.69 seconds;understands that during this event, the GB squad set a new British record timeof 3:10.73; notes that to date, Duncan has won two Gold and six Silver Olympicmedals and that he will enter the pool on 30 July 2025 for his individualevent, the 200m individual medley, which is a discipline that has brought theUniversity of Stirling swimmer success at the last two Olympic Games, in Parisduring 2024, and in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games held four years ago, winningSilver on each occasion; notes that he also took second place on the podium inthe event at the World Championships, which was held in Japan in 2023; furthernotes that Duncan is the British record holder for the event; understands thatearlier in July 2025, Duncan was presented with his OBE for services toswimming by His Majesty The King at an investiture ceremony, which was held atthe Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and that he is attending his sixthWorld Championships; further understands that Duncan is also one of 10 swimmersfrom the University of Stirling’s high-performance programme, the largestnumber they have had selected for the competition, and commends Duncan, andeveryone involved from the University, on their highly momentous achievementsin addition to their continued discipline and strong performance for Scotland,as well as for the entire United Kingdom.
