Welcoming the LGB Alliance’s Report, Compelled Conformity

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the LGB Alliance report, Compelled Conformity: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual experiences of EDI in UK workplaces; notes in particular the finding that 91% of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) respondents to the report’s survey did not feel comfortable being grouped under the broader LGBTQ+ umbrella, which, it understands, is often used in workplaces as part of an organisation’s equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) policy; further notes that the report states that there is a perception that current EDI approaches often overlook or misunderstand LGB-specific experiences; expresses concern that 35% of respondents to the report’s survey reported experiencing social exclusion or hostility from colleagues or management due to their beliefs, while more than a third of respondents said that they were informally advised to stay silent about their views, resulting, it understands, in reported self-censorship and self-excluding from workplace conversations; notes the finding that 90% of respondents who participate in formal EDI teams and LGBTQ+ staff networks feel that these networks do not represent them, and that lesbian, gay and bisexual voices are often sidelined from such networks; regrets that the report finds that 65% of respondents reported feeling pressure to publicly affirm views they do not hold, including mandatory pronoun sharing and compulsory training; acknowledges the report’s conclusion that workplaces can be difficult environments for LGB staff whose views on sex, gender, and sexual orientation align with biological definitions under the law, and believes that EDI practices and policies should be based on the law rather than what it considers to be the ideological agendas of activist organisations and lobby groups.
