Kirsty Mack,The First Scottish Woman to Conquer K2

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Kirsty Mack, who is a Bridge of Allan-based mountaineer, on, according to public expedition records, becoming the first Scottish woman known to reach to summit of the Himalayan mountain, K2; understands that Kirsty, who is originally from Menstrie, reached the peak of the world’s second highest mountain on 11 August 2025 at 3.32 pm; believes that the 8,611-metre peak is widely considered the most dangerous of the plus 8,000 metre-high mountains; acknowledges that Kirsty said that she undertook this challenge for her father and grandfather "and every veteran who reminds us that courage isn’t about never falling, it’s about always getting back up”; notes that Kirsty's achievement is part of her project, From Surgery to Summit, which began after a ski accident left her without the use of her dominant arm; further notes that, following multiple surgeries and years of rehab, Kirsty regained movement but still lives with lasting limitations; acknowledges that Kirsty has said that this was “about resilience…standing on K2 is proof that setbacks don’t define your limits. It was also a way to honour my Dad and Grampa, both veterans, and raise funds for Erskine, who cared for them"; notes that her father, Thomas Angus Mack MBE, served with the RAF, and grandfather, Reuben Marshall Rogers, was a member of the Royal Corps of Signals; acknowledges that Thomas and Reuben were cared for by Erskine Veterans Charity; notes that Kirsty joins the Scots, Bruce Normand and Alasdair McKenzie, who reached the summit of K2 in 2007 and 2023 respectively; commends Kirsty on her achievements, as K2 is her fourth over 8,000-metre peak; believes that this highlights her passion to show that injury does not end ambition and that the mountains, in her own words, can “teach us resilience like nothing else"; congratulates Kirsty on her extremely magnanimous fundraising endeavours, with her immediate focus being on reaching her fundraising goal for Erskine, and notes that, thereafter, she plans to return to the hills of Scotland with her dog, Morar.
