Runners Take Off on Glasgow Airport Runway in Unique Training Event
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates AJ Bell, Great Scottish Run and Glasgow Airport for collaborating to deliver the first ever Glasgow Airport Runway Run, which is an innovative and memorable training event; notes that demand far outstripped the places available, with more than 800 Great Scottish Runners applying for just 50 coveted places; acknowledges the commitment and creativity shown in staging such an exceptional opportunity, including the work of the airport fire crews, who welcomed runners with fire engines lit up, the Stride running group, which led a warm-up, and the Outlier Run Club, which provided pacing support around the course; understands that participants underwent full airport-level security checks before stepping onto the runway, experienced the unique stillness and darkness of the airfield in the early hours, and braved strong headwinds along the landing strip, which added to both the challenge and the atmosphere; further understands that there was a sense of camaraderie and pride as runners finished the course to applause, sirens and the sight of planes parked on the tarmac; congratulates those who combined the experience with fundraising efforts, with some runners raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust and other good causes, and commends all who took part for helping to create an extraordinary sporting occasion, which, it believes, reflects both Scotland’s enthusiasm for running and the special role of Glasgow Airport in hosting such a one-of-a-kind event.
