Remembering Scotland and Celtic Goalkeeper John Thomson

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that it is now 94 years since the Scotland and Celtic goalkeeper, John Thomson, sadly lost his life aged just 22, following a collision during a match against Rangers at Ibrox on 5 September 1931; understands that John was born on 28 January 1909 in Kirkcaldy, to John and Jean Thomson, grew up in the mining community of Cardenden in Fife, and became a miner at the Bowhill colliery aged just 14; appreciates that John’s talent as a promising goalkeeper was spotted early when, in 1926, Celtic signed 17-year-old Thomson for £10, and that he went on to play 164 games for the club, plus four appearances for Scotland; commends the work of the John Thomson Memorial Committee in keeping the memory of John and his achievements alive throughout the community and Scotland, and further commends the work of Alex Burns MBE, former chairman of Cardenden community council for more than a quarter of a century and founder of the John Thomson children's football tournament, which ran for 40 years in the Cardenden and Kinglassie area.
