Town Break Marks 33 Years of Dementia Support in Stirling

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates that the dementia support charity, Town Break, is marking 33 years of helping people with the condition, as well as their families, in Stirling; acknowledges that, on 16 September 1992, a small group of people in Stirling came together with the vision to create a safe, welcoming space for people living with dementia and their families, which has since grown and developed into Town Break dementia support services, a charity that has touched the lives of more than 15,000 families across Forth Valley and which is now a trusted service spanning Stirling, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire; understands that, from groups and carer support sessions to days out and social activities, Town Break has become a lifeline for people living with dementia and their families; welcomes the empowerment of thousands of volunteers that the charity has also facilitated, in addition to partnering with many funders and community organisations; understands that, back in 1992, dementia was not spoken about openly, which often left patients and families feeling isolated; further understands that, with support being extremely difficult to find to counter this isolation, Town Break was founded as a place of friendship and connection; believes that around 90,000 people in Scotland are currently living with dementia and that it is one of the leading causes of death in the country; understands that, by 2040, the number of people living with dementia in Scotland is expected to increase by at least 50%; notes that, in this regard, Town Break has stated that it is setting out a bold ambition for the years ahead to reach more families “so no one feels left behind”, to challenge stigma and change the conversation around dementia and to build inclusive communities where people living with dementia are valued and included; wishes the charity all the very best for the future, and commends everyone involved for their highly magnanimous, empathic and community-focused work.
