Dumfries's People Project, Community Clean-up of the A75 at The Glen

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates members of Dumfries’s People Project on their exceptional community effort in collecting no fewer than 65 sacks of rubbish from the roadside verges of the A75 at the stretch known locally as “The Glen”; acknowledges the pride and dedication shown by volunteers in tackling roadside litter that blights local landscapes, harms wildlife, blocks drains and watercourses, and detracts from the visitor experience on one of the region’s key trunk routes; notes with concern the ongoing scale of littering from vehicles and the costs borne by taxpayers and local authorities to address it; recognises the significant safety risks faced by volunteers and operatives working adjacent to high-speed traffic, including limited refuge space, poor sightlines, and variable weather conditions; commends the group’s collaboration with relevant authorities to conduct the clean-up safely; thanks all involved for their civic leadership, and calls on Transport Scotland, local authorities, Police Scotland and roadside operators to enhance deterrence and enforcement against littering, improve signage and driver education, schedule verge maintenance to minimise hazards, and provide clear, safe protocols for any permitted community clean-ups, so that communities are not left to shoulder this burden alone.
