University of Glasgow Celebrates 575th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Glasgow on celebrating the 575th anniversary of its establishment, marking more than five centuries of continuous contribution to education, scholarship and public life; recognises the university’s origins as an institution founded for the people of the city of Glasgow and its evolution from a civic university into a globally renowned centre of learning and research, which, it understands, is consistently ranked among the world’s top institutions; acknowledges the university’s long and distinguished history of academic excellence, innovation and leadership, including the contributions of its alumni, among them Nobel laureates, UK prime ministers and first ministers of Scotland, as well as its role as a member of the Russell Group and leading international research networks, working collaboratively to address global challenges; acknowledges the university’s continued commitment to using learning in the service of others and society, reflecting on its world-changing past while inspiring future generations of students, researchers and graduates to deliver breakthroughs of lasting local, national and international significance, and congratulates the University of Glasgow, its Principal, staff, students, alumni and wider community on reaching this significant milestone and on their ongoing contribution to the social, cultural and economic life of Scotland and beyond.
