Protests Across Iran

The motion

That the Parliament notes with grave concern the ongoing protests across Iran, in which the Iranian people, including large numbers of women and young people, are courageously demanding an end to what it sees as repression, religious dictatorship, and systemic human rights abuses, and calling for the establishment of a democratic and secular republic; condemns the reported violent crackdown by the Iranian authorities, which, it understands, has resulted in the deaths of protesters, mass arrests, and credible fears of further severe reprisals; calls for the immediate release of all those detained for exercising their fundamental rights; pays tribute to the determination of the Iranian people in their pursuit of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, and encourages the UK Government, working with international partners, to continue to engage through diplomatic and multilateral channels to promote the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Iran.
