Specsavers Alloa Helping Young People with Weekend Employment

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Specsavers Alloa branch is proving the value of traditional weekend jobs for young people; acknowledges that the business sees the value in these roles for building confidence, as well as instilling customer service and teamwork skills; understands that young people support their teams with appointments, greeting customers and assisting with the day’s work, which provides hands-on experience in a professional environment; applauds the business’s passion for encouraging younger people to consider optometry as a potential career; understands that one member of weekend staff is gaining practical experience while studying optometry at university; acknowledges that a decline in Saturday jobs has been highlighted by Specsavers as one factor affecting young people's preparedness for employment; considers that retail experience is important in learning to work as part of a team and developing communication and customer service skills, which can stay with a person for life, and commends Specsavers for its proactive work in facilitating these opportunities for young people, which can be essential in the development of life skills and confidence.
