Condemning the Detention of Scots Following the Interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla
The motion
That the Parliament condemns the reported detention of two people from Scotland, by Israeli forces following the interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla; understands that those detained were among international participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla; further understands that the flotilla, comprising dozens of civilian vessels carrying humanitarian aid, was intercepted in international waters while attempting to reach Gaza; notes reports that large numbers of activists from multiple countries were detained during the operation; expresses serious concern at footage and accounts regarding the treatment of civilian detainees, with reports of the use of extreme force, and numerous allegations of abuse and mistreatment; recognises the widespread international concern and criticism that has followed the incident; affirms the right of individuals to participate in peaceful humanitarian efforts; expresses deep concern at the apparent disregard for international law and human rights standards; stresses the urgent need for humanitarian access to Gaza and for all parties to act in a manner consistent with international law and the protection of civilians; urges the UK Government to support international efforts to end the blockade and ensure safe passage for future flotilla missions; believes that Israel's ongoing assault on the Palestinian people is genocide; urges the international community to take stronger measures to intervene and end the suffering of the Palestinian people, and conveys solidarity with flotilla participants in their united call for justice and humanity in the face of what it considers to be one of the gravest humanitarian crises of our time.
