Motion · S7M-00176 · 27 May 2026
Condemning Human Rights Abuses in Iran
The motion
That the Parliament expresses its concern that, since what it sees as the unlawful attacks by the US and Israel on Iran began on 28 February 2026, Iranian authorities have reportedly executed at least 36 individuals sentenced to death after being convicted of politically-motivated charges, following what it believes to be grossly unfair trials; understands that at least 78 protesters and other people with real or perceived links to banned opposition groups are under sentence of death and at risk of execution, including 41 people arrested in relation to the January 2026 protests, at least five of whom were children at the time of the alleged offence; regrets that, according to Human Rights Watch, military forces are reportedly conducting a campaign to recruit children as young as 12 to become military combatants, which is a grave violation of children’s rights and considered by the International Criminal Court to be a war crime when the children are under 15-years-old; expresses solidarity with the Iranian citizens impacted and their friends and relatives, both in Scotland and around the world; condemns these grave and ongoing abuses of human rights, and calls on both the Scottish and UK governments to urge that the human rights of all Iranian citizens are respected.
