Recognising PTSD Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that PTSD Awareness Day takes place on 27 June every year; believes that this is an opportunity to increase understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder and its impact on veterans and their families; acknowledges that PTSD remains widely misunderstood, despite affecting around 1 in 10 veterans, with many waiting an average of 14 years before seeking help; notes that untreated PTSD can have serious consequences, including anxiety, depression, isolation as well as harm to relationships and wellbeing; recognises that PTSD does not always present in obvious ways, often appearing through everyday difficulties such as sleep disruption, avoidance and heightened anxiety, and welcomes the work of Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, including its programme of free awareness webinars aimed at improving understanding, reducing stigma and promoting recovery.
