Congratulations to For Women Scotland on Landmark Supreme Court Victory
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates For Women Scotland on its successful legal challenge and the landmark judgment handed down by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on 16 April 2025; recognises what it sees as the determination, perseverance and public service demonstrated by the organisation and its supporters throughout years of litigation; notes that the judgment provides important legal clarity regarding the meaning of "woman" and "sex" within the framework of the Equality Act 2010; believes that this judgment represents a significant victory for common sense, the rule of law and democracy, and notes that campaigners succeeded despite what it sees as sustained opposition from much of Scotland's political establishment; acknowledges the contribution made by campaigners who sought to ensure that sex-based rights and protections are clearly understood and upheld in law; believes that clarity and certainty in legislation are essential for public bodies, service providers and the wider public, and wishes For Women Scotland and all those involved every success in their continued efforts.
