University of Aberdeen Opens Next Generation Field Cycling Imaging

That the Parliament welcomes the recent opening of the next-generation Field Cycling Imaging (FCI) scanner at the University of Aberdeen; understands that this technology has the potential to reveal entirely new information about the human body and transform diagnosis and treatment across a range of medical conditions; believes that the FCI scanner is the only device of its kind capable of producing images of tissues in any organ using a wide range of magnetic fields, enabling forms of analysis that were not previously possible; recognises that this breakthrough builds on the University of Aberdeen’s internationally recognised legacy in medical imaging, dating back to its pioneering development of the world’s first whole-body MRI scanner in the 1980s; notes that, since October 2025, four clinical research studies have commenced using the new scanner, focusing on acute stroke, brain health, cardiac fibrosis and brain cancer; further notes that three further studies are expected to begin in 2026, including research into breast cancer, knee osteoarthritis and glioblastoma, with these projects together securing £2.82 million in research funding in the scanner’s first year of activity; commends the efforts of all staff and researchers involved in bringing this pioneering technology to fruition, and wishes them all the best in the future.
