Reaffirming Opposition to the Relaxation of Firearms Reforms

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern recent public commentary suggesting that aspects of UK firearms legislation should be reconsidered; recognises that the reforms introduced in the aftermath of the Dunblane tragedy, in which 16 school children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, were killed, have contributed significantly to protecting communities across Scotland and the wider UK from further gun violence over the past three decades; considers that any attempt to minimise the severity of that tragedy or the importance of subsequent firearms reforms is dangerous and deeply misguided; commends the efforts of the bereaved families, survivors and campaigners in Dunblane in securing these important reforms; believes that the lessons of Dunblane must never be forgotten, and calls on all those contributing to public debate on this issue to do so with sensitivity and due regard for the devastating impact of gun violence in Scotland and the UK.
