Aleke Banda
The motion
That the Parliament offers its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Aleke Banda, a former Malawian MP, who has died aged 71; recognises his immense contribution to the struggle for democracy in Malawi, his role in strengthening Malawi’s multiparty democracy, particularly in his ministerial roles in finance and agriculture, as a Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay and in his determination to see a free and fair media; welcomes the role that Aleke Banda played in building links between Malawi and Scotland, and considers him a giant of Malawian politics and a man who will be sorely missed.
