Keep Aberdeen to London Rail Services
The motion
That the Parliament notes the Review of the Intercity Express Programme by Sir Andrew Foster, in which he suggests that the long-distance routes between London and Inverness and Aberdeen could stop being served by through trains; believes that this is an unacceptable approach to east coast rail services that would harm business and tourism in Aberdeen and throughout the north east of Scotland; believes that this may force commuters onto planes, which could harm efforts to tackle climate change; notes the Strategic Transport Project Review, which states the electrification of the railway line between the central belt and Aberdeen as an aim; calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to reject Sir Andrew Foster’s proposals, and believes that, if the UK Government wishes to invest only in electric trains, it should contribute to the electrification of the Edinburgh and Glasgow to Aberdeen line instead of cutting services.
