Scams Awareness Month 2014
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes Scams Awareness Month 2014, which is being run throughout May in Scotland by Citizens Advice Scotland in partnership with the Trading Standards Institute and Police Scotland; is concerned at the worrying statistic that an estimated 300,000 people fall victim to a scam every year in Scotland and that scams are widely understood to be an underreported crime; welcomes the 105% increase in reporting of scams to the Citizens Advice consumer service after Scams Awareness Month 2013 and the 14% increase in the reporting of bogus selling over the last year; supports Citizens Advice Bureaux across Scotland, which will take local action to fight scams and raise awareness in the communities they serve of how to avoid scams, how to report scams and where to get advice if you have fallen victim to a scam; notes that scams take on all sorts of forms, including online, through the post, over the telephone and on the doorstep or out in the street, and commends everyone involved with Scams Awareness Month who is supporting communities across Scotland to fight back against the criminals that blight them with scams.
