University of Strathclyde Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Professor Frank Leslie

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Strathclyde on its event on 4 June 2014 to recognise the life and legacy of Professor Frank Leslie, whom it considers to have been an influential and dedicated mathematician; notes that Professor Leslie’s research led to the advancement of a theory of liquid crystals, which has found practical applications in the manufacturing of mobile phones, computers and flatscreen TVs, and considers that his collaboration with Professor Ericksen means that Professor Leslie’s legacy is a lasting one with Ericksen-Leslie equations consistently finding new and exciting applications in the world of engineering and biology.
