The motion

That the Parliament welcomes what it sees as the work of train guards in helping to ensure the safe operation of trains and in providing passenger assistance and reassurance on services throughout Central Scotland and the rest of the country; believes that the guards play a vital role in protecting trains and when acting in emergencies, such as driver incapacity, failure of train safety systems and derailments; considers that they play a vital role in helping women, disabled and older passengers feel more secure when using services and in providing assistance with access onto and on board trains; welcomes what it considers the broad support from the STUC, women's, pensioners’ groups and disability groups for retaining guards on trains, and notes the view that the Scottish Government should consider ensuring that bidders for the new ScotRail franchise retain guards.
