John Nelson, MBE
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates John Nelson from Hamilton on being appointed an MBE in the Queen’s 2014 Birthday Honours list; understands that this appointment was made for John's longstanding service in the Anti-Apartheid Movement and its successor organisation, Action for Southern Africa; notes that John was the secretary of the Scottish Committee of the Anti-Apartheid Movement for its entire existence; understands the important role played by the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Scotland, including its role in the boycott of South African goods and its prominence in calls for an end to loans to the "apartheid state"; believes that the organisation also called for equality in a host of other former colonies, including Zimbabwe, and understands that John played a central role in these campaigns; praises John’s commitment to Action for Southern Africa in his role as secretary of the organisation; considers the MBE to be worthy recognition of John’s dedication, and wishes both John and Action for Southern Africa every success in the future.
