Stonewall Scotland Report, Unhealthy Attitudes

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the Stonewall Scotland report, Unhealthy Attitudes, which surveyed 3,001 health and social care staff across the UK, including 426 from Scotland; considers that the report demonstrates that, despite health and social care organisations having a duty to treat people fairly and equally, there are major gaps relating to LGBT people in the knowledge and training of many staff; notes with concern that, in the last five years, three in 10 patient-facing staff in Scotland said that they had heard colleagues make negative remarks about lesbian, gay or bisexual people, nearly one in five were aware of negative comments being made about trans people and almost 10% of those with direct responsibilities for patient care witnessed colleagues express the dangerous belief that someone can be "cured" of being lesbian, gay or bisexual; considers that such discrimination might prevent LGBT people from accessing quality health and social care services, and urges the Scottish Government to consider the report’s recommendations.
