Raising Awareness of Childhood Cancer

The motion

That the Parliament notes that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; is concerned that cancer is still the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people across the UK; understands that, during September, the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is urging the public to wear a gold ribbon, either in person or on social media profiles, to raise awareness; considers that there is an urgent need to raise public awareness of the need to spot the early signs of childhood cancer, in particular the need for improved support for GPs in identifying suspected cancer, following the finding from a ComRes survey of GPs that almost half ranked insufficient training on identifying symptoms as one of their top three barriers to early diagnosis; notes CLIC Sargent's recommendations for change on childhood cancer diagnosis, including tackling delays in diagnosis and measures to improve care and support for families at diagnosis and beyond, and notes calls for the Scottish Government to take action to address these shortfalls and ensure the best possible support for young cancer patients and their families in Dunfermline and right across Scotland.
