Hemiplegia Awareness Week 2015

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 12 to 16 October 2015 is Hemiplegia Awareness Week; understands that hemiplegia affects one in 1,000 children across the UK and can occur before or during birth; notes that it is caused by damage to a part of the brain and can affect either side of the body with varying degrees of weakness; understands that this impacts on motor control and can cause hidden problems such as epilepsy or speech or visual impairment; recognises that Hemiplegia Awareness Week was established to promote a knowledge and understanding of the condition; notes that the aim of the 2015 campaign is to enable people with hemiplegia to raise awareness in “daily” contexts where they may feel it most, for example in schools and workplaces; further notes that, similarly to Hemiplegia Awareness Week 2014, people are being invited to wear a mitten on one hand on Mitten Monday and believes that this is an effective way to show support for, and raise awareness of, hemiplegia; further understands that other awareness days are scheduled, including Fancy a Laugh? Not ‘Alf on the first day of Hemiplegia Awareness Week, during which noted comedians will be at The Comedy Store in London celebrating and fundraising for HemiHelp, and also Sweet Talking Friday when people will host tea parties to raise awareness and funds; believes that more should be done to help the people and families affected by the condition, and calls on everyone to participate in, and support, Hemiplegia Awareness Week.
