Mental Health and Smoking
The motion
That the Parliament understands that one third of tobacco use in the UK is by people with mental health issues, which it believes is a key factor in developing physical ill-health that can blight their lives and lead to significantly earlier deaths than others; notes what it considers consistent evidence that stopping smoking leads to improvements in tackling depression, reducing anxiety and stress and bringing about a better psychological quality of life; believes that, while people with mental health issues might face barriers to stopping smoking, they have the same motivation to quit as everyone else; considers that addressing the high smoking rate is a central part of supporting their needs, and, in order to improve both their mental and physical health, looks forward to what it hopes will be the next mental health strategy for Scotland recognising the importance of supporting people with mental health issues in stopping smoking.
