Lodged by Jean Urquhart Standard Motion 18 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament understands that the first of the three 100kw turbines at the Shetland Tidal Array project is now exporting power to the Shetland grid; congratulates Nova Innovation and ELSA on developing this renewable energy project and bringing it to fruition; understands that both firms became involved with it because of their confidence in the potential of the tidal industry in Scotland and welcomes what it sees as their ambition to deploy another two turbines by 2018; notes the view that tidal energy has the potential to provide nearly 8% of Europe’s electricity demand; believes that this reinforces the reality of the enormous potential of the renewables industry in Scotland, and considers that continuing investment in such technology is paramount if Scotland is to develop skilled jobs in green energy and meet its targets for combating climate change.
