John "Jock" Moffat, the Pilot who Helped Sink the Bismarck

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its sadness at the death of Lt Cdr John "Jock" Moffat, who was born in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, and who fired the torpedo that helped famously sink the German warship, Bismarck, in 1941; welcomes his heroic effort as a major turning point in the war that greatly helped the Allied effort; understands that the missile was launched from a Swordfish L9726 biplane while flying at 50 feet above the surface under heavy fire in a very dangerous manoeuvre; notes that the torpedo jammed the rudder of Hitler’s flagship, which allowed the guns of the Royal Navy’s home fleet to sink it; applauds Jock’s career in the Naval Air Force, which lasted eight years and included time in four different squadrons; notes that he never lost his love for aviation and flew into his early 90s, and praises him for his service to the country and in helping to bring a quicker end to the Second World War.
