The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the Sea of Opportunity initiative by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF); considers that the common fisheries policy has been destructive for the fishing industry across the UK, with landings of fish more than halved since the 1970s, from 948,000 tonnes to 451,000 in 2014; understands that the Sea of Opportunity initiative aims to take advantage of what it sees as the unparalleled opportunities presented by Brexit to regain control of the exclusive economic zone and reinvigorate the fishing industry and coastal communities; considers that Brexit permits enhanced scope for bilateral trade deals with developed and emerging economies; endorses the comments of the SFF that the First Minister is making “the wrong argument at the wrong time” regarding a second Scottish independence referendum, and calls on the Scottish Government to commit to providing robust and unwavering support for the fishing industry in Scotland.
