Glasgow is the Number One City in the UK for Independent Businesses

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the finding that Glasgow is the number one city in the UK for independent businesses; notes that the finding came from research conducted by the business finance provider, Liberis; understands that, out of 20 cities, Glasgow ranked first for the highest number of independent pubs and newsagents and second in the food and restaurant categories; recognises the importance of small independent businesses to high streets and local economies in the Glasgow city region and across Scotland; echoes the call of the Federation of Small Businesses for the people of Glasgow to continue to back independent firms; notes that Audit Scotland highlighted Glasgow’s three-year business survival rates as an area where Glasgow City Council is not performing well, and commends those traders, who persevere through often difficult trading conditions and increasing overheads, for their contribution in developing the independent retail and food and drink offering across the city of Glasgow.
