Importance of the Scottish Pub Sector
The motion
That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the vital role that pubs play at the heart of communities across Scotland, providing numerous social benefits while also playing a major role in the economy; understands that the country's beer and pub sector employs over 66,000 people and contributes £1.66 billion to the economy; believes however that it is facing challenges, with the number of pubs falling by 14% since 2010; considers that the loss of community pubs highlights the urgent need to support the sector; welcomes the new work by the Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA) to support the sector, including measures to help pubs stock more locally-sourced beers, the creation of a Scottish pubs' governing body and supporting the scheme, Pub is the Hub, which helps pubs to offer a range of additional community services; congratulates the SBPA on developing these initiatives, and wishes it all the best in securing a bright future for Scotland’s pubs.
