Winifred Muir to Receive the British Empire Medal

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Winifred Muir, who grew up in Alloa and who will soon receive the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of her many years of voluntary work supporting Cancer Research UK; understands that Winifred went to Alloa Academy, then worked in Patons and Baldwins; notes that, when she was 23, she left Clackmannanshire for London and it was during that time that she started to get involved in voluntary work by volunteering in a shop, run at the time by Imperial Cancer; further notes that she remained with the charity following its merger with Cancer Research UK, and following her move to the Isle of Bute in 2001; acknowledges that Winifred's father, mother and husband were all diagnosed with cancer, and that she was diagnosed with Parkinson's, which it understands made her more determined to remain with Cancer Research UK where she continues to work; believes that she will receive the BEM from the Lord Lieutenant for Argyll and Bute, and commends Winifred on her resolve and her tireless work for the charity.
