Jacob’s Ladder Improvement Works

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the reopening of the Jacob’s Ladder pathway in Edinburgh following extensive improvement works; understands that the historic route, which first appeared on a map in 1784, connects the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh from under the railway bridge on Calton Road to Regent Road above, and is understood to have been named after Jacob’s dream sequence in the Bible; notes that the project was undertaken thanks to collaboration between Edinburgh World Heritage, the New Waverley Heritage Fund and the City of Edinburgh Council, utilising £150,000 worth of investment; recognises that, before the restoration, the staircase was in a state of disrepair and that stonemason apprentices from St Mary’s Cathedral Workshop used their extensive skills to repair the walls; notes that the new lighting on the pathway has been designed to improve personal safety; thanks everyone involved in the project, and highlights what it considers the benefit that the works will bring to the built heritage of Scotland’s capital city.
