The New BBC Scotland Channel

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the new BBC Scotland channel, which aired for the first time on 24 February 2019, reaching over 700,000 viewers at its peak, and its focus on delivering programmes for Scotland; understands that its programming will include drama, documentaries, comedy and a flagship new hour-long news programme, The Nine; understands that the new channel will run from 7pm to midnight every day and that 95% of programming will be of Scottish origin; notes that, with a budget of £32 million, it is estimated that 140 new jobs will be created; acknowledges the importance of a completely new media platform dedicated to Scotland and wishes those at the BBC the very best in making this a success; further welcomes the announcement that the BBC and the screen arm of Creative Scotland, Screen Scotland, will collaborate together to build on recent improvements in Scotland’s television industry, and commits to 8% of BBC network television spend being in Scotland, and hopes that this will lead to a more sustainable, high quality screen sector in Scotland.
