Annual Commemoration of the Genocide in Rwanda

The motion

That the Parliament notes with due respect the annual commemoration of the genocide in Rwanda of 1994; understands that this event has been held each year since 7 April 2014, which was the 20th anniversary of the start of the 100-day massacre that led to more than a million people dying in three months of machete and gunfire attacks, mostly by extremist Hutus, on the country’s minority Tutsi population; believes that, since then, the international community has been forced to acknowledge that it stood by and did nothing; notes that, although the UN has made a commitment to the idea of "never again", it has also acknowledged that there continue to be genocide risks elsewhere; considers that Rwanda has since become a unique experiment in national reconciliation; believes that it has assiduously enforced social re-engineering in the more than two decades since the devastating events; understands that it has embarked on an ambitious justice and reconciliation process, which has the ultimate aim of all its people once again living side-by-side in peace by focusing on reconstructing the Rwandan identity and balancing justice, truth, peace and security; acknowledges that its constitution now states that all Rwandans share equal rights, and sends its best wishes to the people of Rwanda.
