The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Martin Menzies from Banchory, on being awarded the China Medal for International Collaboration, following 40 years of work with geology students in Guangdong Province; understands that his passion for science stemmed from his father’s career in chemistry and his mentor, Jack Ewan, who he recognises for sparking his passion in rock and mineral science; acknowledges that his Chinese colleagues nominated him for the award due to his decades of work helping to establish new collaborative research teams and break down cultural barriers in the region; commends his efforts to gain access to China, from the 1980s when China was "closed", applying his skills to understand Chinese geology, volcanoes and super-volcanoes; thanks Professor Menzies for his current work in promoting STEM to the next generation, and wishes him continued success, enjoyment and health in his position as emeritus in volcanology at the Royal Holloway University of London.
