First East-West Atlantic Air Crossing Centenary
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges the 100th anniversary of the first east-west Atlantic crossing by air, which was completed by the 634ft R.34 airship, nick-named “Tiny”, stationed at the East Fortune airfield in East Lothian; notes that the airship travelled from East Lothian to Long Island in the United States in 108 hours and that, during the journey, the airship suffered from dwindling fuel supplies and a leak that required the entirety of the crew’s chewing gum supply to fix; acknowledges that the National Museum of Flight, which is based at the East Fortune airfield, is marking the centenary with the creation of a digital gallery and recollections from the descendants of the airship’s crew, and hopes that this important piece of East Lothian history is remembered for generations to come.
