Remembering Billy McNeill

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its deep sympathy to the family and friends of the football icon, Billy McNeill, who was affectionately known as "Cesar"; acknowledges that Billy, who had been diagnosed with dementia, passed away on 23 April 2019; remembers his outstanding contribution to Scottish football, most notably his feat in leading Celtic to be the first team from the UK to win the European Cup; applauds his efforts as both Celtic captain and manager; notes the endeavours of Billy outside of football, including his commitment to social justice and his receipt of an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow, and hopes that the legacy of Billy as a talented leader and captain is a lasting example for young people across sport and society.
