Accession of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates His Majesty Emperor Naruhito on his accession to the Imperial Throne of Japan; notes that both Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have a strong affiliation with the UK, having both studied at the University of Oxford; acknowledges the importance of strengthening the economic, cultural, educational and business ties between Scotland and Japan; notes that diplomatic relations between Scotland and Japan date back to the beginning of the 17th century when King James VI was the first monarch in the British Isles to make diplomatic contact with Japan, and wishes Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako every success and happiness during their reign as head of the world’s most enduring hereditary monarchy.
