Glasgow's Growing Hotel Sector

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that investors in Glasgow’s tourism and hospitality sector are, it believes, building additional hotel rooms at a rate much faster than originally projected in the city’s Tourism and Visitor Plan; understands that, throughout 2017 and 2018, 1,052 rooms were built and permission was granted for 12 more hotels, bringing a further 1,900 rooms to Glasgow; further understands that two hotels are scheduled to open in 2019, seven more are due to open in 2020, and dates for the remaining three are still to be confirmed; notes that 10 more developments supplying approximately 1,600 rooms are at various stages of the planning process, demonstrating the ongoing commitment of investors to the city; welcomes the extra 6,600 jobs and £750 million spend that the increasing number of overnight stays is expected to generate, and considers that Glasgow, which recently achieved eighth place in Time Out magazine’s 48 best destinations in the world to visit, will continue to go from strength to strength as an overnight visitor destination.
