Scotland's First Railway Track Uncovered in East Lothian
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that the remains of Scotland’s first railway track have been uncovered in East Lothian by volunteers from the 1722 Waggonway Heritage Group; understands that it was constructed in by the York Buildings Company and ran between Tranent and Cockenzie, bringing coal to the harbour in horse-drawn wagons to fuel saltpans for seawater salt extraction; acknowledges that it was uncovered one metre below the surface and was composed of a coal dust-covered cobble walkway between two wooden tracks, which have since decayed; recognises that the Waggonway Museum, which is located at Cockenzie Harbour, has been charting the heritage group’s work and is recording the history of the waggonway; thanks all of the group's volunteers on their work, and wishes it all the best for their future digs.
