Ibrox Disaster
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 2 January 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the Ibrox disaster, which killed 66 people and injured over 200 following an Old Firm game; notes that this was one of the worst football disasters ever in Scotland and the UK; acknowledges that all who died were under 50, including Ian Scott Hunter from Newmains in Lanarkshire, who was only 14; remembers all who died and stands in solidarity with the family of Ian and all the families who lost loved ones on that fateful day; pays tribute to the solidarity demonstrated across society and the football world, including by both Rangers and Celtic; notes that the teams competed again at the stadium exactly 50 years later and laid wreathes to commemorate those who died; feels strongly that such events put football as a game into sharp perspective, and believes that spectator sport should always be safe and never again should someone leave their home to watch their team and not return.
