The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges War Graves Week, which takes place from 21 to 28 May 2021; notes that this initiative is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s (CWGC) new awareness week, which is designed to encourage communities to come together and discover world war heritage on their doorstep; considers that many of the men and women who fought and died in the two world wars came from, and are today commemorated in, a great many local communities, either laid to rest in cemeteries or named on memorials that were built, and are maintained, by CWGC and, as such, the organisation is keen that more people learn more about them during War Graves Week; notes that CWGC states that marking War Graves Week can be as simple as visiting a local cemetery and memorial; acknowledges that, with over 300,000 casualties commemorated across the UK, there is more than likely a Commonwealth war grave on everyone’s doorstep; notes that a new search function on CWGC’s website allows people to find out more about the service personnel who lived in their communities, and encourages everyone to sign up to one of the events or the digital festival, to learn more about war graves from home.
